Costs rise for Red Hook schools project

RED HOOK - The Board of Education will meet on Monday to vote on change orders for a $14.95 million project to update security and repair roofs in the school district's three buildings.

The session is scheduled for 8 a.m. in the district office at 7401 S. Broadway.

Officials expect to review requests to cover additional costs of about $80,000 for structural work needed for a chimney at the high school and $100,000 for heating, ventilation and air conditioning system changes in the middle school.

"It's something when they opened the (middle school) ceiling ... that they didn't anticipate," said district Business Manager Bruce Martin.

Trustees agreed efforts to keep the project from falling behind schedule would include adding meetings on short notice to review change orders that exceed $20,000. They said they want to avoid rushing the project but also noted the need for timely sessions was demonstrated when recent heavy rains damaged a section of roof because drains had not yet been installed.

During a board meeting on Thursday, trustees were told most of the work, which was approved by voters in January 2007, is scheduled to be done before classes begin in the fall.

At the high school, the project includes $2.59 million for roofs; $185,618 for structural reinforcement; $549,251 for masonry repairs and reconstruction; and $543,287 for ceiling replacement.

At the middle school, it includes $1.62 million for roofs; $151,015 for structural reinforcement; $307,174 for masonry repairs and reconstruction; and $343,118 for ceiling replacement.

At the elementary school, it includes $5.54 million for roofs; $411,825 for structural reinforcement; $508,706 for masonry repairs and reconstruction; and $1.83 million for ceiling and pipe replacement.
